The gutted building retains much of its original external features, including its conical roofs, chimneys and even a coat of arms above the main door. The estate is overlooked by the peak of Schiehallion, a conical mountain sometimes translated as "Fairy hill of the Caledonians". Visiting the grounds of this beautiful mansion is a favorite of both locals and tourists. It is free to visit the grounds though occasionally the opportunity will become available to tour the inside for a fee. You can read about my visit here in my post on Greystone Mansion.

It had the first citrus associationto pack and ship oranges from California. Citrus quality and productiondecreased in the 1940s and '50s due to a mysterious disease thatattacked citrus trees. That, along with a booming home building afterWorld War II, lead to a sharp decline in citrus production and closingof the Claremont packing houses in the 1960s. Of all the homes on this list, this is the only one so far that will give you beautiful views of the ocean.
What should I bring when visiting Dunalastair Castle?
It was designed by Andrew Heiton, the Perthshire architect who also worked on the Atholl Palace Hotel, Fonab Castle in Pitlochry, and both Perth and Dunkeld railway stations. Despite being derelict and roofless, it’s still hugely impressive, retaining many original features – conical roofs, turrets, chimneys and a coat of arms above the main door. I’ve read so much about the abandoned mansion that I can’t wait to discover it. Today, there have been many proposals to restore the once-majestic house. However, due to the high cost, nothing has come of them thus far. But this was short-lived after a fire broke out and around the 1950s, the house’s contents and furniture were sold off.
Exploring the Enchanting History of Dunalastair Castle in Scotland

The house is known for its unique design and colorful history. You used to be able to tour the house but now the new owners only make it available to the public during special events. I have not been able to confirm if the grounds are still open to the public during COVID 19. The Greystone Mansion in Beverly Hills feels like the perfect home to kick off this list with.
Lying close to Loch Rannoch, there have been a few people keen to restore the once majestic building, however, so far, none of them have met the current owner's own standards. Described as "neither a castle, nor comfortable family home", it began to fall into decline during the First World War, as the staff needed to run such a prestigious house became scarce. Incredibly, the house was then taken on by Hugh Tennent, the former owner of Glasgow's famous Wellpark Brewery and lager. The new owner then demolished the house and built the present house in 1859.

Citrus production from the four packing houses served by the Santa Fe shipped 1,062 cars in 1943 and 1,396 cars in 1944.
The Hollyhock House was designed by Frank Llyod Wright for Aline Barnsdall though she quickly became disillusioned with the home and donated it to the city of LA. The hollyhock was Aline’s favorite flower and was used as a theme throughout the house. Even if you cannot tour the home it is visible from the park and the city views are wonderful as well. I recommend stopping by for at least a quick visit if you can.

The castle’s strategic location provided the clan with a stronghold from which they could oversee and protect their lands in the heart of the Scottish Highlands. Over the years, the castle underwent various renovations and expansions, evolving from a defensive structure to a more refined residence, all while maintaining its distinctive Scottish baronial architecture. To view the aerial view of the current map location, you need to select an aerial year to display.
Dunalastair Castle, though in ruins, continues to be a significant symbol of Scotland’s rich heritage. Efforts to preserve this historical site are crucial in keeping the stories of Scotland’s past alive. It stands as a beacon of cultural significance, inviting visitors to delve into the depths of Scottish history. The River Tummel, with its serene flow, has been a silent witness to the estate’s history. It adds a tranquil charm to the rugged landscape, offering a peaceful contrast to the dramatic history of the castle. The Dunalastair Estate, with its sprawling landscapes and haunting ruins, holds a history intertwined with the Scottish clans, especially the Clan Donnachaidh and the Macdonalds.
Plus, it has a great view of the city, she said, making it the ultimate LA outdoor space. Putman said the architect does not design much anymore, but she believes this is one of his greatest homes. The home at 2538 Sundown Drive is for sale at $2.3 million, listed by Compass agents Carl Gambino and Ariel Putman, and was recently shared on real estate fan account Zillow Gone Wild. The Duke of Sussex offered a rare look inside his house (well, a corner of his house) on a video call this week. “When I built in steel, what you saw was what you got,” the plain-spoken Koenig once said. What Buck and Carlotta Stahl got when they drove up to Woods Drive in 1954 was more than they ever envisioned.
The textile blocks are supposed to help keep the interior bright. From the photos that I have seen online the inside looks really interesting. The two-story Baronial mansion was designed by the same architect, Andrew Heiton, who was responsible for many other notable structures in Perthsire and the surrounding area. It’s rather complex – essentially, Dunalastair Estate originally belonged to the Robertson family but the clan name is Donnachaidh. A year later, the house and estate were sold to the chairman of the Caledonian Railway Company, James Clark Bunten – he’s the great-grandfather of the current owner.

There are so many different ways that we are spoiled in Southern California but the incredible variety of homes that we can visit is truly something special. Please note that not all of the homes on this list are open to the public but I will make sure to specify which ones are available for you to visit vs which ones you can drive by. Like many historical sites, Dunalastair Castle has witnessed its fair share of turbulent times. It stood witness to clan feuds, battles, and shifting alliances during the tumultuous history of Scotland.
